Five fundamental rules of Russian pronounciation

Если вы хотите говорить по-русски без акцента, постарайтесь запомнить ПЯТЬ очень важных правил русского произношения!

1. Letter O

Remember that unstressed O is pronounced like ah:

Борис (Boris) [Барис]

она (she) — [ана],

оно (it) — [ано],

хорошо (well) — [харашо],

плохо (badly) — [плоха],

молоко (milk) — [малако]

2. Letter E and Letter Я

Remember that unstressed E and Я pronounced like ih:

всегда (always) — [всигда]

сестра (sister) — [систра]

жена (wife) — [жина]

пятнадцать (fifteen) — [питнадцать]

3. Two consonants:

When two consonants are pronounced together, both must be either voiced or voiceless.

In Russian, the second one always remains at it is and the first one changes according to the second:

вcё (everything, all) — [фсё],

все (everybody, all) — [фсе]

вчера (yesterday) — [фчера]

сделать (to do, to make) — [зделать]

юбка (skirt) — [юпка]

4. Voiced turn into voiceless

At the ends of words all six voiced consonant turn into their voiceless equivalents:

вход (entrance) — [вхот]

багаж (baggage) — [багаш]

Киев — [Киеф]

кровь (blood) — [крофь]

хлеб (bread) — [хлеп]

рог (horn) — [рок]

четверг (Thursday) — [четверк]

муж (husband) — [муш]

5. Softness

Remember that the letters Е, Ё, И, Ю, Я, and Ь palatalize the preceding consonant

Remember:

Ж, Ш, Ц are always hard: жить (to live) — [жыть] шина (tire) — [шына] цирк (circus) — [цырк]

Щ, Ч are always soft: площадь (square) — [площять] часто (often) — [чяста]
